What does an MRI scan show?
MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of organs and tissues within the body. It can clearly depict abnormalities in soft tissues like muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints that may not be visible on X-rays. MRI is particularly useful for imaging the brain, spine and certain internal organs without using ionizing radiation.
How does an MRI work?
When placed inside the MRI scanner, the hydrogen atoms in the body are energized by radio waves. As they emit signals in response, magnetic field gradients localize the signals and a computer processes the data into images. Patients lie still inside the cylindrical scanner where cross-sectional slices are obtained, building up 3D views of areas of interest. Contrast dye may highlight certain tissues.
What conditions does MRI diagnose?
MRI helps evaluate many orthopedic issues like herniated discs, ligament tears, fractures and joint abnormalities. It is also valuable for brain and spine imaging as well as detecting abnormalities in soft tissues, organs and vascular structures. Common uses include assessment of tumors, stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and injuries to muscles, tendons and cartilage.
How do I prepare for an MRI?
Leave all metallic objects like jewelry, watches, credit cards or hair accessories at home. Inform staff if you have any implants. You may need to change or remove clothing with metal. Drink plenty of water if contrast is used and follow instructions about eating before. Lie still and remain silent during the scan. Headphones or music may help with claustrophobia. Arrange transport home afterward.
Where can I get an MRI done?
Hospital radiology departments, private imaging centers and some doctor's offices have MRI scanners. Check with your insurance provider to locate in-network facilities. Ask your referring physician for recommendations based on your location and medical needs. Call ahead to schedule, inquire about costs and ensure you understand all pre-exam prep requirements.
