FAQs about Federally Qualified Health Center (fqhc)

What is an FQHC?

An FQHC, or Federally Qualified Health Center, provides comprehensive primary care in underserved areas. They receive federal funding to serve anyone regardless of insurance status or ability to pay on a sliding scale based on income. Services include medical, dental, behavioral health and sometimes pharmacy/vision.

What services does an FQHC provide?

In addition to primary medical care, FQHCs commonly provide OB-GYN and prenatal care, pediatric services, lab tests, X-rays, screenings and preventive health services. They also offer enabling services like transportation assistance, interpretation, health education and referrals to social services. Behavioral health services are often incorporated as well.

How do FQHCs get their funding?

FQHCs receive grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration as well as higher Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement rates to support serving underinsured and uninsured patients. They must be located in a medically underserved area or serve medically underserved populations to qualify for this "FQHC status" and federal funding support.

How can I find an FQHC?

Check with your state or local health department for a list of FQHCs in your area. You can also search the federal Health Resources and Services Administration database online or contact your insurance provider. FQHCs are required to serve all regardless of ability to pay so they work to be located conveniently in the communities they serve.

How do I become a patient?

Call or visit the FQHC website or office nearest you. Inform them you are a new patient and schedule an appointment. Bring photo ID, insurance cards if applicable, income/residency verification and any medical records you have. They will register you, collect basic information and assign you to a primary provider for comprehensive and coordinated care. Sliding fee discounts apply based on income.
