What is an OTA's scope of practice?
Occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) work under the direction and supervision of occupational therapists (OTs). OTAs implement treatment plans, conduct sessions, assist with assessments and train patients/caregivers. They help enable independence in daily living and work skills.
What settings do OTAs work in?
OTAs are integral members of rehabilitation teams across settings including hospitals, schools, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, private practices, home health and community-based organizations. Wherever OT services are provided, OTAs often work as important support professionals.
What populations do they serve?
As part of the OT team approach, OTAs treat people of all ages from pediatrics to geriatrics experiencing physical, developmental, social, behavioral or cognitive conditions impacting daily functioning. They serve diverse clientele.
How do OTAs support OTs?
Under OT supervision, OTAs implement treatment plans through hands-on activities and exercises targeting clients' goals. They assist with assessments, document progress, train caregivers, prepare materials and allow more patients to receive OT services through the team approach.
How are OTA services accessed?
To receive OTA services, clients are referred to an occupational therapist who determines the need for OTA support based on the treatment plan and setting. OTAs work under OT supervision to help clients achieve functional independence.
