FAQs about Electrodiagnostic Medicine

What conditions do Electrodiagnostic Medicine specialists treat?

Electrodiagnostic experts diagnose muscle, nerve, brain/spinal cord diseases causing weakness, numbness, pain using EMG/nerve conduction studies to measure electrical activity in tissues.

Why would my doctor refer me to an electrodiagnostic specialist?

If you have muscle weakness or neuropathy your doctor can't explain, this testing can confirm neurologic causes like ALS, pinched nerves, myopathies to guide treatment.

What credentials should an electrodiagnostic specialist have?

Look for neurology or physical medicine training, followed by special certification in electrodiagnostic testing, interpreting complex muscle/nerve electrical patterns.

What does electrodiagnostic testing involve?

The specialist places small needles in muscles to measure electrical activity at rest, with movement. Sticky pads applied to skin assess nerve impulses. Discomfort is minimal.

How do I prepare for electrodiagnostic testing?

No special preparation needed. Take medications normally. Wear loose clothing for access to legs/arms. Testing takes about 1 hour for a focused study, longer for comprehensive assessment.

Electrodiagnostic medicine is the medical subspecialty that applies neurophysiologic techniques to diagnose, evaluate, and treat patients with impairments of the neurologic, neuromuscular, and/or muscular systems. Qualified physicians are trained in performing electrophysiological testing and interpretation of the test data. They require knowledge in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, histology, and pathology of the brain, spinal cord, autonomic nerves, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction, and muscles. They must know clinical features and treatment of diseases of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, as well as those of neuromuscular junction and muscle. Physicians also require special knowledge about electric signal processing, including waveform analysis, electronics and instrumentation, stimulation and recording equipment, and statistics.
