FAQs about Phlebology

When should I see a phlebologist?

See a phlebologist if you have venous disorders like varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency, venous ulcers, or venous thromboembolism requiring diagnosis and management by a vein expert.

What conditions does a phlebologist treat?

Phlebologists treat all conditions affecting the veins, ranging from cosmetic issues like spider veins, to medical issues like deep vein thrombosis, venous leg ulcers, and venous insufficiency causing pain, swelling, or skin changes.

How do I find a qualified phlebologist?

Look for a board-certified phlebologist, or a vascular surgeon or interventional radiologist with specialized Phlebology training and extensive vein procedure experience documented in an online profile.

What tests will a phlebologist perform?

They will obtain a medical history and perform a physical exam of your veins. They may order ultrasound imaging, CT scans, or additional testing to diagnose the underlying venous disorder.

What treatments do phlebologists provide?

They offer minimally invasive treatments like endovenous ablation using heat, sclerotherapy injections, or vascular embolization procedures to manage varicose veins, prevent complications of venous diseases, and relieve symptoms.

Phlebology is the medical discipline that involves the diagnosis and treatment of venous disorders, including spider veins, varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, venous leg ulcers, congenital venous abnormalities, venous thromboembolism and other disorders of venous origin. A phlebologist has attained a minimum of 50 hours of CME units in phlebology-related courses, and is knowledgeable of and trained in a variety of diagnostic techniques including physical examination, venous imaging techniques such as duplex ultrasound, CT and MR, plethysmographic techniques and laboratory evaluation related to venous thromboembolism. The phlebologist is also trained in a variety of therapeutic interventions, which may include compression, sclerotherapy, cutaneous vascular laser, endovenous thermoablation procedures (laser and radiofrequency) endovenous chemical ablation, surgical procedures (e.g., ambulatory phlebectomy, venous ligation), vasoactive medications and the management of venous thromboembolism.
