What is Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology?
It involves the diagnosis of oral mucosal and jaw diseases including oral cancer and other abnormalities. Pathologists perform biopsies of lesions and work closely with dentists and physicians to diagnose and stage conditions.
What education/training is required?
A DDS/DMD degree and 2-3 year specialty residency are required, followed by board certification. Residencies provide experience in advanced oral pathology, histopathology and research techniques through both laboratory and clinical settings.
What types of cases do they see?
Pathologists evaluate biopsies of oral lesions, odontogenic cysts and tumors of the jaw, head and neck cancers and other abnormalities. Differential diagnosis involves microscopic tissue examination and interpretation.
Where do pathologists work?
Many practice in private pathology labs or work for hospitals, universities, research organizations, the military or dental product companies. Some hold full-time academic positions conducting research.
