What is Lithotripsy?
Lithotripsy is a non-invasive procedure to break up kidney stones and gallstones using shockwave Lithotripsy or laser Lithotripsy. High-energy shockwaves or a laser beam is directed at stones from outside the body to fragmentation them into tiny sand-like pieces that can pass in urine or stool. It aims to eliminate stones and symptoms like pain without requiring incision or major surgery.
What does the procedure involve?
During shockwave Lithotripsy, patients lie on a table while an ultrasound device locates the stones. The shockwave machine emits pulses to crack the stones. For laser Lithotripsy, a tiny laser probe is inserted through the skin or during cystoscopy/laparoscopy. Both are usually outpatient and done under local anesthetic or light sedation. Fragment removal may require a stent or follow up procedures.
What are the risks?
As with any medical procedure, risks include infection, bleeding and reactions to anesthesia. Specific risks can be bruising, pain from the shockwaves/laser, damage to nearby organs from missed stones and failure to fully fragment all pieces of large stones. Retreatment may sometimes be needed but overall Lithotripsy has low risks and is less invasive than older stone removal surgeries.
How can I prepare?
Follow all pre-procedure instructions from your doctor, which may involve dietary changes, hydration, pain medications and bowel prep prior. Provide a medical history. Expect to sign consent forms and arrange transportation home after as mild pain medication will be prescribed. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing and leave valuables at home. Have prescription filled promptly after if stents or follow up care are needed.
Where can Lithotripsy be performed?
Lithotripsy is commonly done on an outpatient basis at urology or interventional radiology specialty clinics, ambulatory surgery centers or hospital radiology departments that have the specialized Lithotripsy machines. Ask your urologist or primary care doctor for a referral to a local facility covered by your insurance that performs both shockwave and laser Lithotripsy procedures as clinically indicated.
