The Growing Popularity of Non-Alcoholic Beer
With more people adopting healthier lifestyles or looking to cut back on alcohol, non-alcoholic beer has exploded in popularity recently. Major beer companies like Heineken have even launched new 0.0 beers to meet the rising demand. But how does non-alcoholic beer stack up to regular beer when it comes to taste, nutrition and your health?
What is Non-Alcoholic Beer?
Non-alcoholic beer, also called NA beer, has little to no alcohol content. By law in the United States, NA beers cannot contain more than 0.5% alcohol by volume (ABV). Many have between 0.0-0.5% ABV. For comparison, regular beer typically ranges from 4-6% ABV.
NA beer is made just like regular beer, but the alcohol is removed at the end of the brewing process. The most common methods used are vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis and arrested fermentation. The alcohol removal allows the unique malt and hop flavors to remain while eliminating most of the alcohol.
