Green Tea vs Matcha: Benefits, Caffeine Content and Preparation
Both green tea and matcha have become incredibly popular health beverages in recent years. However, there are some key differences between these two green teas. Green tea is made from steeped tea leaves, while matcha is a powdered green tea concentrate. Understanding their similarities, differences and preparation methods can help you decide which one is right for you.
Green Tea Overview
All types of true tea come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Green tea is made from leaves that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing. This helps retain high concentrations of antioxidants like epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) that provide many of green teas health benefits.
To make green tea, fresh tea leaves are quickly steamed or pan-fried and then dried. This stops the oxidation process that turns the leaves dark. The dried green tea leaves are then steeped in hot water to extract the flavor. Popular varieties like sencha and matcha are harvested at different times of year for unique flavor profiles.
Matcha Green Tea Overview
Matcha is also derived from Camellia sinensis leaves. But unlike regular green tea, matcha tea leaves are shade-grown for several weeks before harvest. This unique cultivation method increases chlorophyll and amino acid content in the leaves.
After harvest, the tea leaves destined for matcha are stemmed, deveined and then stone-ground into a fine powder. When the powdered matcha is whisked in hot water, you drink the entire leaf versus just steeping and strain
