Can Coughing Really Give You Abs?
Getting defined abs is a goal for many people who want to get in better shape. But attaining a six-pack takes commitment, hard work, and persistence. Some people look for shortcuts to getting the abs they want without all the effort. One question that comes up is: can coughing give you abs?
What Muscles Are Worked When You Cough?
To understand if coughing can give you abdominals, it helps to know what muscles are engaged when you cough. Some of the key muscles activated include:
- Abdominal muscles - The abdominal muscles, including the rectus abdominis, external obliques, and internal obliques, contract when you cough. The contraction pushes air out of your lungs.
- Diaphragm - The diaphragm muscle below your lungs also contracts, helping to expel air.
- Intercostals - These muscles between your ribs contract to change the shape of your chest cavity and move air out.
So coughing definitely works your abs and core area. But is that enough to tone your midsection?
Can Occasional Coughing Strengthen Your Core?
Coughing forces your abdominals to contract, similar to when you do a crunch or sit-up. So it makes sense that repeated coughing may strengthen those muscles over time. However, there are some important caveats here:
- Coughing works abs, but not in an even, controlled way. It's more of a sudden, forceful contraction without the accompanying eccentric contraction you get in typical ab exercises.
- You likely won't cough vigorously enough, frequently enough to build significant muscle. Sporadic coughing here and there, even if forceful, probably won't lead to defined abs.
- Coughing can strain muscles and even injure connective tissue in the core area if too intense. So it needs to be an occasional event.
Can Prolonged Coughing From Illness Impact Ab Muscles?
In some cases, a severe cough can last for weeks at a time. This may occur with respiratory infections, pneumonia, bronchitis, pertussis, and other illnesses. Is it possible for frequent coughing over days or weeks to tone ab muscles?
It's unlikely prolonged bouts of coughing will build your abdominal muscles. Here's why:
- Frequent coughing can fatigue and strain muscles over time, to the point they struggle to contract with any strength or control.
- A severe cough over many days often goes hand in hand with fatigue, weakness, poor nutrition, and low energy levels not an ideal environment for muscle growth.
- Your body is using resources to fight infection rather than focus on muscle repair and hypertrophy.
In fact, losing muscle mass while very sick is more likely than gaining muscle tone. Any ab muscle definition gained through coughing which is improbable would disappear once the illness ends and coughing stops.
Is Coughing Harmful to Your Ab Muscles and Core?
Occasional coughing is a normal reflex that likely won't hurt your abs. But severe, prolonged bouts of coughing can actually strain the muscles and connective tissue in your torso.
Risks of Prolonged Coughing on Core Muscles and Tissue
Intense fits of coughing or repeated coughing over days or weeks can impact your muscles, fascia, ligaments and tendons. This includes tissues that make up and support your abdominal area. Possible injuries and conditions include:
- Strained or torn abdominal muscles
- Bulging or herniated discs in the spine
- Torn intercostal muscles between ribs
- Pelvic floor dysfunction
- Rectus diastasis (separated abdominal muscles)
Studies have shown coughing is a common cause of issues like abdominal muscle strains, hernias, pelvic prolapse, and rectus diastasis, especially in women who are pregnant or postpartum.
Can Coughing Complicate a Hernia?
For those who already have an inguinal, femoral, ventral, incisional or other hernia, coughing can make the condition worse. The rise in abdominal pressure from coughing can push more tissue through the hernia defect. This can enlarge the bulge and increase pain. Anyone with an active hernia should see a doctor when they develop a cough to reduce risks of complications.
Tips to Strengthen Your Core Muscles Safely
It's clear that while coughing may contract your abdominals, it isn't an efficient or smart way to build core strength. Here are healthier tips to tone and define your midsection safely:
Incorporate Core Exercises
Add Pilates, planks, crunches, and other ab exercises into your routine 2-3 days per week. Use good form, take breaks between sets, and build progressive resistance by adding weights or resistance bands.
Train With Weights
Exercises like squats, deadlifts, rows, and presses force your core to brace and support your spine. This builds stabilizer muscle capacity. Use weights that challenge muscles close to failure around the 8-12 rep mark for best results.
Improve Diet and Lifestyle Habits
Cut calories moderately while eating enough protein to maintain muscle mass. Stay active daily, exercise 3-5 days weekly, and get enough sleep. These evidence-based ways to lose fat will reveal your abs.
Coughing doesn't provide enough muscular overload to induce hypertrophy. Stick to proven training methods, nutrition strategies, recovery protocols and lifestyle behaviors to sculpt six pack abs safely.
