Understanding Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly. It falls under the broader category of neural tube defects, which affect the development of a fetus' brain, spinal cord, and the tissues that enclose them.
The most common and serious type is called myelomeningocele. This occurs when the spinal column remains open along the back, allowing the spinal cord and protective membranes (meninges) to push out and form a sac. This can result in nerve damage and loss of muscle function in parts of the body.
Treatments include surgery to close the opening soon after birth. Ongoing therapies and assistive devices may also help manage symptoms and complications from nerve damage and paralysis.
Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause is unknown, but experts believe genes, nutrition, and environmental factors play a role. Having a family history increases risk. Consuming adequate folic acid before and during early pregnancy helps prevent spina bifida.
Types and Severity
There are four types, with varying degrees of severity:
- Myelomeningocele
- Meningocele
- Lipomyelomeningocele
- Occulta
In mild forms, there may be little or no damage. More severe cases can result in paralysis, loss of sensation, and loss of bladder and bowel control depending on the location.
Notable Celebrities with Spina Bifida
Troy Aikman - Former NFL Quarterback
Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman was born with spina bifida occulta. This is a mild form that often causes no spinal or neurological problems.
Aikman showed no symptoms or complications and it wasn't discovered until a back examination. He went on to have a legendary NFL career, leading the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl championships.
Whenua Patuwai - Zumba Instructor

She initially used leg braces, crutches, and a wheelchair. Despite mobility challenges, she discovered a passion for fitness and became certified Zumba instructor. She inspires others not to limit themselves and believes dance helped improve her strength and stamina.

Adapting and Overcoming
Though complications vary, spina bifida is very manageable. Modern treatments, assistive technology, and greater public awareness help those affected adapt, thrive, and realize their potential.
The celebrities highlighted faced differing severity, but didn't let spina bifida define or limit them. Their stories are inspiring examples of overcoming challenges to achieve great success.
