Can Tizanidine Cause Hair Loss?
Hair loss can be a distressing side effect of certain medications. Tizanidine is a muscle relaxant that works by decreasing spasticity caused by conditions like multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury. While hair loss is not a commonly reported side effect of tizanidine, some people do wonder if this medication can contribute to thinning hair or balding.
How Tizanidine Works
Tizanidine belongs to a class of medications called alpha-2 adrenergic agonists. It works by binding to alpha-2 receptors which are found throughout the body. When tizanidine activates these receptors, it inhibits the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. This in turn reduces muscle tone, spasticity and uncontrolled muscle movements.
By relaxing muscles, tizanidine can help relieve spasms, cramping and tightness caused by medical conditions like multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke or cerebral palsy. It is sold under the brand names Zanaflex and Sirdalud.
Common Side Effects of Tizanidine
Some of the most common side effects of tizanidine include:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Dry mouth
- Low blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
- Increased liver enzymes
Hair loss is not commonly listed as one of the main side effects of tizanidine. However, some people taking this medication do report noticeable hair thinning or shedding.
Can Tizanidine Cause Hair Loss?
There are a few reasons why tizanidine could potentially contribute to hair loss in some people:
Stress on the Body
Taking any medication puts stress on the body as it processes the drug. For those predisposed to hair loss, this stress could trigger increased shedding. Telogen effluvium is a form of temporary hair loss often caused by physical or emotional stressors. Tizanidine side effects like drowsiness and dizziness could also indirectly increase shedding by disrupting sleep and daily routines.
Reduced Blood Flow
One of the main side effects of tizanidine is lowered blood pressure. While this is desirable to help relax muscles, reduced blood flow could impact the hair follicles. Hair follicles need adequate circulation to receive the oxygen and nutrients they need to produce strong, healthy hair shafts.
Hormonal Changes
There is some speculation that tizanidine could potentially cause hormonal changes that contribute to hair loss. However, there is limited research specifically looking at the effects of tizanidine on hormones. More studies are needed to determine if hormonal imbalances due to tizanidine could result in increased hair shedding.
