Understanding Prediabetes and HbA1c Ranges
Prediabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not yet classified as type 2 diabetes. The prediabetic range for the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test, which measures average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months, is between 5.7% and 6.4%. If HbA1c levels fall in this range, it indicates there is already some insulin resistance happening and that diabetes could develop in the future if preventative lifestyle changes are not made.
Diagnosing Prediabetes
An HbA1c blood test is one of the most common ways prediabetes is diagnosed. This test gives valuable information about long-term blood sugar control versus a simple blood glucose test which shows blood sugar only at that moment in time. There are a few different prediabetic ranges for HbA1c based on guidance from leading health organizations:
- 5.7% to 6.4% - Indicating an increased risk for developing diabetes in the future
- 5.7% to 5.9% - Indicating "low" prediabetes risk
- 6.0% to 6.4% - Indicating "high" prediabetes
